Body Painting Book will release August 2008!
Author Doug Mitchel

Body Painting is a photo intense examination of the emerging art of painting bodies with non-toxic paints. From face painting children to the creation of painted “clothes” Doug Mitchel follows ten artists as they apply paint to skin. Each artist is represented by one chapter, each chapter follows a “paint job” from the initial concept to the application of the final details. Each design is different, but all are colorful and creative. With over 450 color photographs printed on 144 pages, this book documents the techniques and tools used by established artists. Application methods include the brush, airbrush and even markers. Each method has advantages and disadvantages, each has its place and each is covered in detail in this new book from Wolfgang Publications. In addition to the photo sequences with descriptive captions, each chapter includes an interview with the artist. Topics include the way in which the artist learned his or her trade, preferred tools and which paint they prefer to use.  The discussion of paint choices includes airbrushed body make up, textile acrylics, liquid latex and markers from companies like Crayola. As pointed out in the captions and the interviews, each material has good points and bad, all are covered in Body Painting. The best teachers are the men and women who have already mastered the skill. Body Painting presents the accumulated wisdom and experience of ten “teachers” each of who has a lesson to share with the readers. With a wealth of photos Body Painting is both a colorful look at an emerging art form, and a very useful how-to book.

Body Painting: Living Works of Art

Body painting is perhaps the world’s oldest art form. Many Aboriginal communities have been painting their bodies for thousands of years, often in dance. They use the surface of their body not only for artistic creativity, but to tell a story which may relate to conventions, laws and religion. For myself, I enjoy creating hand-painted designs with bright, bold and brilliant colors to transform models & clients into living works of art. I find many magical, freeing and uniting qualities in this.

Part of the magic of body painting is unlike tattoo art, you are transformed for only a day. You can express yourself and experience the art without the long-term commitment of it. Once the art is created it can only be enjoyed for a day, except for its shadows or photos that are left behind.
I would recommend body painting to everyone & anyone! – regardless of your size, age, ethnicity, or background. It is therapeutic, relaxing, freeing, and fun! You do not have to have a ‘supermodel’ body to be painted.
Body painting unites us, Rick Mills stated it best when he said, ‘Body painting breaks down the barriers between people – with body painting, race and skin color do not matter and to paint one another is to re-affirm that we are all human beings, each with an equal right to live in peace and dignity on this planet.’
Body painting is a powerful visual phenomenon, it is a great way to turn heads at any event! We can paint for fashion shows, photo shoots, calendars, private events, festivals and gallery openings. We use only 100% safe and comfortable make-up to transform models and clients into works of art.
