Artist Rebecca Rose

Artist Rebecca Rose is a Washington, DC based artist whose focus is on healing through artistic transformation by painting on both the human body and the traditional canvas. To Rose, body painting is about self love and self acceptance, about being comfortable in the skin you are in - it's an echoing of the subconscious through the arts. "I've painted many people, and everyone I've painted has something they feel insecure about. Body painting is not only a physical transformation, but a way of seeing yourself in a new light. It can be therapeutic, as the paint loves every body. The real magic isn't found in the finished painting, but in the process of the painting... I love painting people as there's an openness, a sense of trust and vulnerability, often with complete strangers. A beautiful reminder that we are all connected and we are all human." - Rose.

When a person is painted, there is often a rebirth, a new "becoming". As the paint has the power to transform a persons identity.  The paint can erase a person's history, race, sex and background. The painting process can help acknowledge and recognize feelings that have been lurking in the subconscious and increase our self-esteem and self awareness. It elevates an individual to a higher state as they become a living, breathing work of art.

Rose also paints on the traditional canvas, and has a fondness for painting bright, bold, dreamlike images. Rose's paintings focus on the positive in people and in life.

"I give you the world", Rose describes the painting: "Growing up my father lived in a village in Alaska. I didn't see him much but he would often send packages in the mail. Inside one of the packages he sent was a small crystal globe and with it a note that read "If I could give you the world, I would". This painting is for him ... The multiple worlds/planets in the painting represent that there is enough for everyone.  I think a lot of us operate out of the consciousness of scarcity - we don't believe there's enough - not enough time, not enough money, etc. But there is enough"

"Trust the Universe: All the distractions, all the "I need more time" and the "I'm not ready", are understandable, but only for a short while. The truth is, there's never a "right time" or a "completely ready". There comes a time when one simply hopes for the best, closes their eyes, pinches their nose and jumps into the abyss. Its time to close your eyes, let go and jump."

About China Magic: The painting China Magic was painted for Rose's son, before she ever met him. Staying up late at night, dreaming of her soon to be son. The painting has a lot of symbolic meaning - from the foo dogs mouths (one of the foo dogs mouth is open and one of the dogs mouth is closed - representing "breathe in, breathe out", to become more aware of what's worth our energy) to the Chinese characters (Love, Peace, Prayers, strength, family, River and more) in the sky to the family names written in Chinese on the lamp post.
